It's a new year and this blog will be updated with a much much needed update!

Kennedy & Giada

by Brady Withers on 09/06/10

It's always interesting when you get people in front of the camera, most adults seem to freeze up and give the same smile over and over, finding a little emotion with them is always an interesting challenge. This is one of the reasons I like photographing children so much, their emotions are right near the surface and they are always so willing to express them.

Take Kennedy and Giada for example, their Mom kept apologizing for them, worrying they were being difficult, but they were being anything but! I loved working with them, just waiting for that moment or two when I would be able to capture some real emotion, this is what photographers love. Add on to the fact both girls were just beautiful and the weather and location were perfect and we ended up with some incredible images (and one of my more memorable photoshoots). These pictures were taken at Murray Park in about an hour, why are you taking your chidren to generic and boring studios? Call me, lets capture some awesome memories for you and your family!

Now onto the images! (Seriously, how beautiful are these girls!?)

This is a really small sample of the images we ended up with. Thank you Kennedy & Giada, you two were so much fun to work with, I hope in the future we find ourselves working together again!

Sunset Photography Tips!

by Brady Withers on 08/05/10

I fell in love with photography for one reason, sunsets. I love being somewhere and watching the sky change, the colors change, I find such an incredible calm photographing sunsets. People will tell you that sunset pictures are a dime a dozen, I disagree, they are all unique, all different, a picture that will never be captured again. You will remember an amazing sunset for a long time, these are a few tips to help you better capture those moments.

1. Don't go when its a clear day! Look for mixed weather, lots of clouds but not flat gray clouds. Clouds are what are going to give your picture some depth and color.

2. Go early. Pick your spot early and get there a half and hour to an hour before sunset, walk around, look at the different views. Even before sunset you can get some amazing pictures.

3. Simple Photography rule, use the rule of thirds. Imagine a tic tac toe board on your camera view finder, you want the sun on the intersecting points. Try and keep the horizon out of the center of you image as well. (of course these are just rules and they are made to be broken!)

4. Patience. Enjoy yourself, put some headphones on and just enjoy the beauty of it. What's your rush? They sky is going to change constantly. This is just before the sun sets behind the horizon.

5. Don't leave after the sun sets! The most beautiful colors are yet to come. Let the sun light up the clouds from below. Stay a half an hour after the sun drops behind the horizon, you wont regret it.

6. Turn off your flash! Use a Tripod to keep your camera still. Tripods are nerdy, right? Trust me, you haven't seen nerdy until you have seen the beast I carry around.

7. Once you have your camera on the tripod, turn it to a 2 or 10 second timer. The exposures are going to be slow for you to handhold the camera and pushing the button will cause the camera to shake. (Your expsure or time the shutter will be open could be longer than 1 second) With the timer on you can push the button and move your hand and then the camera will take the picture, no shake!

8. Look around, turn around, move the camera lower, higher, etc! If you try a few of these things I know you will end up with better sunset pictures and better memories to go along with them.

Directions to this spot: This is Sunset Beach or Black rock at the Great Salt Lake. Take I-80 west to the Salt Air / Great Salt Lake Marina Exit. Go West to the marina, instead of turning into the marina follow the road to the west of the marina. Its a bit of a dirt road but cars can make it no problem, follow it until you get to black rock, bring some bug spray and start exploring.

Hibbert Family

by Brady Withers on 07/19/10

I have known the Hibbert's for 15 years, their son Brett has been one of my best friends for just as long. When they called I instantly accepted an offer to take their family pictures, not only would I get to spend some time with some of my favorite people in the world, I would get to travel to Bear Lake and take pictures at a beautiful location.

The locations they had picked out were awesome, I am hoping at some point I get to head back to Bear Lake with another family, so many interesting places to shoot! The weather couldn't make up it's mind, it was sunny, then cloudy, then windy, then sunny again, kept everyone on their toes though.

Along with a group family pictures we took some individual family shots as well. Everyone was already dressed up and looking good, why not take advantage of the time we had?  I know family pictures aren't always the most fun thing, but I think we captured some really cool memories. I really do hope at some point down the road I have the chance to work with the Hibberts again, thanks guys, it was great to see you again, let's not wait so long next time.

This is just a small sample of the pictures from that evening. Why are you settling for boring in studio family pictures!? Let's get out, have some fun and make some really cool memories that you will be happy to hang on your wall!

Kylee & Jeff, the Reception

by Brady Withers on 06/16/10

It was such a pleasure to work with both Kylee and Jeff, I can only hope that future Brides and Grooms are this much fun to work with. Both of their families were great as well, everyone from Brothers and Sisters, to Grandma's and Grandpa's.

The Reception was held at Magnolia Grove in South Jordan, Utah. The reception center was beautiful both inside and out and made for the perfect backdrop for the evening. Thanks again to Kylee and Jeff for making my job so easy, I can't wait to deliver the final images to you.
